Its development was motivated by Lopez's Latin heritage and pays homage to her career-beginnings as a dancer. Interpolated within the song are recurrent elements of the 1982 composition "Llorando se fue" written by Gonzalo and Ulises Hermosa, a composition that gained notoriety when it was sampled by Kaoma in their 1989 single "Lambada".

Selena's career began as lead vocalist of Los Dinos in 1980. Her albums with Los Dinos on the indie labels failed to gain any chart success. She signed with EMI Latin nine years later as a solo artist though her band continued to tour with her. She released her self-titled debut album that same year, which peaked at number seven on the U.S. Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart. With Selena, the singer outsold other competing female Tejano artists. Her second album, Ven Conmigo, was released a year later and was billed as the first Tejano recording by a female musician to achieve gold status in the United States.

The album received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the record's diverse musical experimentation. Entren Los Que Quieran impacted several charts internationally, peaking at number six on the Billboard Latin Albums chart and number 25 on the Billboard Rap Albums chart. The record spawned seven singles, including "Latinoamérica", which reached the top ten of both the Billboard Latin Digital Songs and Latin Rhythm Digital Songs charts. The record won a total of nine Latin Grammy Awards including Album of the Year. It was also nominated for a Grammy in the Best Latin, Pop, Rock or Urban Album category at the 2012 Grammys.
